So what is Healhy Living? There is so much information available these days that we can get rather confused!
However, if we follow some basic food rules, it’s really not that hard to live a healthy life, think of it as a ‘back to basics’ approach to everyday living.
Here are some tips to help you get started:
Eat REAL food
Choose food that is as close to it’s natural form as possible and stay away from processed foods, especially those with added flavourings, colourings and preservatives. For eg. try raw muesli instead of processed cereals, brown rice instead of white rice, whole grain breads instead of white bread etc.
Quality vs Quantity
Reduce your intake of meat products and buy good quality meats (free range or organic if possible). You can always bulk up with more plant foods, it will be better for your wallet and your health.
Eat a good balance of nutritious foods like legumes, wholegrains, a variety of rainbow coloured vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts. Buy organic and seasonal foods as much as possible.
Don’t forget to also include your omega3 rich foods, especially wild caught salmon, sardines and anchovies.
Grow Your Own Vegetables
It’s really not that difficult to grow your own vegetables, especially salad greens and herbs. If you have limited space, use containers mixed with edible flowers and herbs. You’ll be amazed how quickly you and your family can feast on your home grown vegetables.
